How do you return the Month value in a date field using a saved search formula?

I'm trying to get a date field to return just the month of the date. In excel I would right the formula =text(4 September 2014, "MMM") would return SEP

I'm trying - Field = Formula (text); Summary Type = Group; Formula = TO_CHAR({transdate},'Mon') is returning error.

Trying to compare sales across two financial years and group by month, Oct to Oct

eg
CY LY
Oct 1000 1100
Nov 1010 1200
Dec etc
