Search where field is not empty

I had created an Item search that was working until recently.  The criteria is simple, it is just looking for items that have an entry in a certain free form text field. Although I can see hundreds of items that have text filled in for that field, the search only returns 1 item.  Not sure what is going on.  If I reverse the search and set to where the field is empty, I get the expected results of hundreds of items that don't have anything filled in.
