Merging Contact and Customer Data on a Template

This seems like an easy request, but is it possible to target a dynamic group of contacts in a group and send them an email(through a Marketing Campaign) with merged information from fields on the customer record?

I created a dynamic contact search and want to use this as a group within a Marketing Campaign.  On the template I have created, I wish to use merged data from custom fields found on the customer record.  When I attempt to execute this, I receive emails to dynamic contacts but all the merge fields are blank.  I tried the opposite (dynamic customer search) and the merge fields worked properly but the contacts did not each receive an email (only went to the email address on the customer record).
