Why can't I find companies with an Ampersand (&) in their name using Global Search?

We are a user and a reseller of NetSuite. Our clients have this issue, as well. I've been unable to find an answer here or in SuiteAnswers.

Using Global Search, customers with an Ampersand (&) can't be found (e.g., G & G Sales Corporation).

An exception may be that they can be found if configured with no spaces adjacent to the ampersand (G&G).

Using prefixes, quotation marks and wildcards didn't help.
