How to find where a custom field is referenced in a formula (on saved search or workflow)

If you change the ID of a custom field that is referenced in a saved search formula then when you try to edit that saved search an error occurs and you can not edit it nor run it. Other than using a 3rd party product like Strongpoint is there any way to find out if a custom field is referenced in a any formula in advance of one totally destroying their system by changing the ID of a custom field without realizing the impact?
