Whats the best way to handle item trials?

We have items that we send out for trials but do not want to class it as a sale (from an accounting point of view).

It would be good if we could have a mirror of a sales order but instead of a sale it would be accounted for as a trial, and then if turned into a sale would then would be invoiced?

Tried custom transaction but cant see to fulfil from these?
