Before Submit Workflow Executes Correctly from UI but not from Other Sources

Hi,

I have a workflow that sets the values of fields based on other fields on the same record before submit to keep things consistent. It executes correctly in the UI when I Edit force Save. However when the workflow triggers on a edit caused by a mass update the field values referenced are null and not what happens when triggered manually. The Workflow logs show the actions executing the same in both cases with the only difference that the Set Field Value action sets the field value to null. Any ideas why this would happen?
