Bank imported statement - duplicates

Hi,

I have imported bank statements for the last 18 months (up till June 2018) with no duplicates. But, when i imported for July 2018 it shows as imported 178 and duplicates 178 as shown below. I understand that system marks duplicate if the transactions are already existing in the system. My understanding is that if we reconcile the previous statements then duplicates count would go down. Please correct my understanding.

Also, in this such situation, what steps needs to be taken? What should be the general process?
