point of sale question

We are a distributor and have a counter for walk in sales.  Currently we use the Cash Sales function for cash and credit card and use Enter Sales Orders for customers with an account.  My guys are frustrated doing it this way so I am looking for a possible change.  How are others doing this?  POS system?  We don't have a lot of counter activity in a day so an expensive system would not pay for itself.  If POS system is the way to go, is it economically feasible?  Hoping for something to be able to enter an order and
