Customize Email Templates for Order Received

I need to Customize Email Templates for Order Received. The standard template I used is   Standard Web Site Order Received.

There is a custom field in customer record

is VIP Customer 

It is a checkbox with ID custentity5

I need to add a condition in template so that if customer is a VIP customer (i.e. custentity5  is checked), display Thank you for being  VIP Customer.

What I have tried is

<#if customer.custentity5 == "T"> Thank you for being  VIP Customer.<br />

</#if>

But I m getting error Cant compare value of these types.

Any example and assistance would be greatly appreciated . Thanks!
