How can I limit characters in free text field without scripting?

Is there a way to limit the number of characters that can be entered in a field without scripting? I have seen some answers in Suiteanswers but they require scripting? I need to limit the number of characters in the Address fields in the customer form. So for example Address line 1 should be limited to 30 characters and address line 2 to 50 characters. Any idea how I can do this and if this is possible with a workflow? Thanks.
