Setting the external id

I see that I can set the item's external id when I import, but is there any way to do this when I setup the item manually in the UI?

I have created case 648294 and waited 15 minutes to be transferred to the web services group, but the rep dropped my call during transfer and noone called me back. I thought that was rude.
