Customizing Sales Forecast Functions in NetSuite? Anyone?

I'm finding the native NetSuite Sales Forecasting to be pretty pathetic. Has anyone modified the forecasting functionality in any way to improve it?  It appears to be locked down pretty tight. 

ven simple stuff, like customize the columns, include Sales Orders that are backordered from ALL periods not just the current forecast period, etc.
