How can I create a Saved Search that includes a custom field where data is entered into that custom?

I need to create a saved search that includes a custom field where data is entered into that custom field only during the item receipt (from return authorization) but every report I've tried to create the fields are returned blank.

Also - is there a saved search for dummies book/class? Because I'm in desperate need of one =)
