Bi Admin Tool crashing in "consistency check"

Hi All,

I am trying to run the 'Check Global Consistency' on my RPD, but it keeps crashing. It happens at the same place ('Search fro Empty Keys' | see below images). This started happening after a patch merge, where I was attempting to merge together our customizations with a newly upgraded RPD (10.2, from 10.1). Likely, I'll need to open an SR for this, but just wanted to see if anyone has experienced anything like this before.

OBIA 11.1.1.10.2

What exact OBIEE version does 10.2 use? Which 11.1.1.9?

Hi. Sorry, yes ... it is on the 11.1.1.9.x baseline.

Wonder if I could try running the check, in online mode?

Ok, same thing, at the same place, with the online version.

Yes, but which one? If you check MOS Doc ID 1488475.1 you'll see that there are 15 different versions of "11.1.1.9".

Plus .9 is out of error correction support since end December 2018.

    Hi Christian,

I patched OBIEE to 11.1.1.9.181016 during the OBIA upgrade. I think that is the highest at the 11.1.1.9 code line. Unfortunately, this is as high as we can go with Bi Apps ... without trying for an out-of-place 12c upgrade.

    Regards,

    Charles

Ok, so I am trying to see if I can "outsmart" the RPD a little bit . Instead of trying the consistency check at the global level, I have been doing it at various sub-levels. What I am finding is that there are several errors at the top-level of the BMM ... in this case it is called 'Core'. But, still it works. However, when I did the same at the physical layer, I ran into the crash at the Oracle Data Warehouse database object. So, within that, I have been trying to narrow it down (as there are hundreds of objects below there). What I found is that I get the crash here:

I haven't found a particular column yet that gives the crash (doing it one-at-a-time, process of elimination)

Must have something to do with keys, right? Since that is what is is crashing on?

You find me at my LEAST surprised ever.

And yes, that may be it. Still extremely annoying that a "Bundled solution" throws such an error.

And #2: You'd safe yourself a lot of pain by decouplign OBIEE from the rest of the *cough cough* "product".

Ok. I think this may possibly have to do with the version of the BI admin tool. I didn't see that it was specified anywhere, so I used the new version of the BI Admin tool (ie taken from the 10.2 home page). I did that because that OBIEE patch (discussed above) said that we'd need to download the new client tools, after the patch was applied. My thoughts were that the new client tools would be backward compatible (new version would recognize the old objects, but the old version wouldn't recognize the new objects)? Following that reasoning, I did the patch merge with the new admin tool (created and applied the patch). I tried again with different files and still the same type of result - crashing.

To clarify, I was trying to merge the original 10.1; the current 10.2 (which is only an upgraded version of the original - no customizations), and the modified 10.1 (includes our customizations). Now, using the 10.1 version of the admin tool, the patch merge worked and consistency check does not fail ... and, (most importantly) all of the dashboards work!

Possibly, I have mis-configured/mis-installed the new tools. But, doesn't seem likely, since everything else seemed to work. Also, maybe there is a bug in the new tools? My guess is that the old version is needed to be used in the first place, since 2 of the 3 files were from that version. Who knows. Interesting and strange issue. I'm going to do this all over with the old version and see what happens ...

Maybe it has to do with this: Can multiple versions of OBIEE Admin Tool coexist on the same Windows PC? (Doc ID 527984.1)

I had installed mine in separate places, but maybe there was still some kind of conflict.
