Key Metrics definition and updating problem

First, it is a problem with the level where Key Metrics are defined.
Some documents say Key Metrics can be defined on Dataset and Subject Area levels. Additionally, there are instructions how to define Key Metrics on workbook level, meaning, actually, Key Metrics can be defined on Data Set, Subject Area and Workbook level.
Second, migration of workbooks having Key Metrics between PODs.
I have several workbooks where the same Key Metric were manually added to the "Workforce - Core" Subject Area, so the Key Metric is visible only in those workbooks where added manually. Workbooks were initially migrated from DEV to PROD in standard way by exporting DVA file, and worked fine. Later, the workbooks were updated in DEV and the same way re-migrated to PROD, they failed, showing that the columns related to Key Metric do not exist. At the same time, opening the SA in the PROD re-migrated workbook showed the Key Metric present. We found that the Key Metric and Visuals addressing different object IDs. There's no information on Key Metrics handling in FAW, and our guess is that initial PROD migration created some Key Metric related metadata (that's out of the workbook). What was expected, the override of the (re-migrated) workbook will be refreshing all Key Metrics' (metadata) but it's not happening. The refreshed visuals referring to the new Key Metric's ID (like in DEV) but PROD metadata contains the old Key Metric ID (from original migration to PROD), and workbook's re-migration didn't update those Key Metric IDs (in the metadata). Visuals and their Key Metrics are out of sync and showing an error.
Can anyone explain how FAW Key Metrics metadata update works, when the workbook is replaced with updated one. Is there any instrumental way to clear Key Metrics metadata so the re-migrated workbook create a structure that's fully in sync?
Please respect yourself and don't mention obvious "rename the Key Metric", offering workaround for situation that's out of control, and creating a new clutter on top of old one (as well as an update of all PROD visuals to sync to the updated Key Metric ID in SA).
Thank you very much for joining a team in an attempt to make FAW even better tool.
