Technical Issue: eText Report Displays "???" Instead of Expected Values

Hi,😊

I have a technical issue that I am struggling to resolve.

I created an RTF layout, and the preview works correctly when using the BI Publisher Add-in tool.

However, when I upload the layout in eText format, the generated report displays only question marks (???) instead of the expected data. I have not been able to identify the root cause of the problem.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated in helping me resolve this issue and move forward with this topic.

The BIP Desktop in Word cannot preview eText.

The Template Viewer that is installed with the Desktop can preview eText.

The question marks indicate an error in the layout.

Use the Template Viewer, set debug level to Statement (maximum log).

View the generated log for error messages.

If possible, could you please share the eText / RTF template along with a sample XML file generated by the report?

Please remove or mask any sensitive or confidential information from the XML before sharing it.

Having the template and sample XML may help someone identify whether the issue is related to the eText configuration, field mapping, character encoding, or another part of the template.

A sample of the generated output showing the '???' characters would also be helpful.

If the RTF preview is working fine in BIP desktop, I'd be inclined to think the data model and template logic are OK. It feels more like the issue is happening during the eText generation rather than with the data itself.

Check is the character encoding/character set, as that's usually the culprit when the output is showing ???. It's worth reviewing the eText template encoding, the output file encoding [eg UTF-8] & whether there are any special characters in the data that aren't supported by the target character set.

I'd also compare the behaviour between BIP desktop and server, as differences in environment settings can sometimes cause this. Try a very simple eText template with basic ASCII characters only as a quick test - that should help narrow down whether it's a character-set issue or something else in the output generation process.
