Flash deprecation and OBIA 11.1.1.8

We're still on OBIA 11.1.1.8 which uses OBIEE 11.1.1.7.  With the upcoming deprecation of flash, we need to do something quick.  We meant to upgrade the whole system to OIBA 11.1.1.10.2, but something got in the way.  Now we don't have time to do the major upgrade before Flash is gone, but we need to do something to keep dashboards working.  I'm looking for any suggestions or workarounds to get us past this crisis.

OBIEE 12 uses a different Weblogic version, so if we just want to upgrade OBIEE for now, we'd have to set up a separate server.  That seems to be a possibility.  We don't know if anything will break when we move the dashboards and security, so that's another consideration.

Any and all ideas considered - thanks in advance!

  • OBIEE is the less dependant piece of OBIA, even OBIA 9.7.6 can be upgraded to use OBIEE 12c without touching anything else.

That's the easier and safer move you have: move to a newer OBIEE fixing your Flash issues. Sure there is a setting telling OBIEE (including .7) to display pictures instead of Flash for charts, but you lose all interactions and those things.

So you better do an OBIEE upgrade to 12c and you are fine for a while.

As you said an OBIEE upgrade is adding the new OBIEE on the side, you aren't replacing or decommissioning anything which was there with your OBIA, it's really a new OBIEE on the side.

The upgrade will take the content (RPD, catalog + security) and that's where some work could be needed as any upgrade come with things requiring some fixing.

I would say these are your options: highly reduce the functionality of your OBIEE 11.1.1.7 buy switching to pictures or upgrade to OBIEE 12c on the side and done (once you fixed the possible issues you will find).

+1 to Gianni. There is quite literally zero actual dependence between OBI*EE* and OBI*A*.

I habitually upgrade OBIEE for customers and the OBIA part be...let's say left as is.

The ETL and data model aren't really end-client facing so there's you lowest risk. Your analytical platform however is more complex and powerful by an order of magnitude and should be as close ot the last version as possible.

Also: you don't make your data useful and derive value with the ETL but by exposing it in am analytical  platformand provide it to users to work with.

Thanks for the quick answers, you two.  I also checked and it looks like Flash is still around for another year, so we're good.  Your info will help us decide what to do in the short term..
