Support SELECT read only access to SaaS instances
Organization Name (Required - If you are an Oracle Partner, please provide the organization you are logging the idea on behalf of):
Orange S.A.
Description (Required):
There are several ideas regarding this. I created the SR 3-23826054181 : What do we need to do to have SQL Developer or similar access to SaaS Fusion instances.
and after 1,5 y I was told to create an idea instead. I found also similar ideas created 2 or more years ago with no promising feedback from Oracle. Because of BIP limitation in SQL development we and several other customers or consultancies are actually seeking for a solution or enhancement of the tool (similar to SQL Developer, Toad, it doesn't matter the "tool", but rather the concept) for having essential query tool features like:
SQL statement and script execution
SQL code formatting
SQL Tuning Advisor
Visual Query Builder
Compile
Compile with Debug
Syntax check
Error message feedback and linking to offending source
etc.
Use Case and Business Need (Required):
With this any SR can be easier be investigated, a table based LOV be designed, a BIP SELECT created, a test case found as per more complex conditions, etc. We are talking here of 1000 of administrators, support, consultants, that would benefit from this.
Everybody has accepted that REST API is much safer for UPDATES, etc. so when changing data. But here Oracle should help making it easier for the owner of the data to access and analyze the data, and understand the structure of the underlying tables. At the end Oracle benefits from a strong technical community.
Personally I find, more customers would subscribe Oracle Cloud SaaS if knowing the necessary data is accessible via a tool an not the current workaround on OTBI and can leverage the self managed support.

Read-only will access will give the flexibility to the customers to write their custom SQLs.

Hello,
I suspect that the only reason this idea doesn't have a 1000 upvotes is that it's not been seen by many, and it's a pity.
I would upvote it 1000 times if I could :-)
We asked this question also, and received the answer that:
1 - you can access in read only by making a SQL query in BIP. Well, technically true, but the productivity of this approach is extremely low (years of practice on it - you need the patience of a zen master and unlimited budget for your organisation)
2 - it would be too heavy for the infrastructure to allow database-level read-only access from the outside as anyone could build run-away queries. Well, that's just plain wrong, as such an access could be limited by time outs and volume limits, like BIP itself is.
Talking to other customers in user groups meetings about how they tackle this, the general answer was that they "dumped all the data in a data warehouse on premises, via the API, and worked from there". That would work indeed, it "only" negates the benefits of a SAAS solution of course :-)
I hope commenting will surface this idea in people's queue so they can vote on it like it deserves,
thanks,
Géraud
