Ultra 20 hangs at the splash screen

807557 Member Posts: 35,835
I have a 3 year old, seldom used Ultra 20 (AMD Opteron, unknown speed) with 2 GB RAM, 2x80 GB SATA and DVD that has worked with no problems at all since new. I decided on a fresh install of OpenSolaris and when I rebooted the machine, I got the gigantic Sun Microsystems + logo splash screen and that's it. It just hangs there forever. There is a square LED on the system board that reads "75" if that's any help.

Any idea what the problem is? I'd rather not toss the box. It's still quite usable and a nice machine.

  • The documentation for that system can be readily retrieved from Docs.Sun.Com
You might wish to download the 25MB PDF of the User Guide and glance through the various appendices.

The codes are described in there.
(Hint: I think POST is failing while recognizing one of the drives.)

Thank you. The User Manual states that 75 is IDE detection. My second disk is dead. I removed it and the system booted right up. Problem resolved. Thanks for the quick answer!
