Hello,

I seen that official hard drive sizes at the moment of offering this machine was running till around 200GB. Will the integrated controller allow more, lets say 1TB for SATA drives?

Can the backplane be used with other SATA controllers instead of connecting it to the motherboard?

Since the platform has already been qualified to function with disks that are larger than the nominal 137GB boundary for LBA28, then you'll do fine with larger unqualified drives.
See http://www.48bitlba.com/ for a brief description of how larger drives might function.
The only caveat I foresee is whether differing SATA technologies can be functional (e.g. 1.5 versus 3.0Gbps SATA throughput - but then you'd just jumper the faster disk down to the slower operation).

... probably "yes" so long as you don't expect them to be your boot drive. You will need to go try it then return here to report what you've observed.
