D-Link Router Standard DNS Update

Question originally posted by user highpeak on dyncommunity.com on 15 February 2018
My D-Link router has 3 choices for updating DynDNS: Static, Free, Custom. I'm trying to update my Standard DNS hostname with a dynamic IP. I'm using my account username and "short code" as the password. The IP address is not updating when I use Static or Custom.
Any advice would be welcome.

I'm not familiar with your specific router, so I don't know why it is giving you three options to choose from. If one of the choices allows you to manually enter a server address (custom maybe?) then members.dyndns.org should be entered there.
Generally speaking, setup for your device should be along the lines of this:
-Service: (DynDNS.org/Dyn DNS/Dyn)
-Domain: exampledomain.com (this isn’t always an option, but this would be the domain of your hostname)
-Host: examplehost.exampledomain.com (if the host you are updating is a subdomain, like they are in Dynamic DNS Pro, this will be the full hostname).
-Server Address: members.dyndns.org
-Username: Your username
-Password: Your password or updater client key. You can see if you have generated an updater client key by going to My Account > Account Settings at http://account.dyn.com
Once those fields are completed, your device should start updating the IP automatically once it changes.
alternately, you can try using an update client like this on a computer in the network that is ok to be left on 24/7 (so as to not have downtime.)

If D-Link followed Dyn's API, then any of those four options would be fine, because there are no different APIs for these services.
What you can do:
- Perform a manual update via web browser using this update URL:
<a class="jive-link-external-small" href="https://members.dyndns.org/nic/update?hostname=YourDomainName" rel="nofollow">https://members.dyndns.org/nic/update?hostname=YourDomainName</a>
If you face a problem, then it is likely that the router faces it too. - Refer to D-Link support. It is their router and firmware.
