DynDNS Pro subscription costs up by 120% in 5 years time :-(

svliegenApr 7 2019 — edited May 31 2019

I've been a loyal Dyn customer for more than 6 years now. And I know that prices go up with inflation, that's fine. But from 25 USD (in 2014) to 55 USD (in 2019) for essentially the same service, that is downright outrageous.

Is this the added value that Oracle brings? Looks like it is time to find another DynDNS provider.

Hi @"82bd0360-2b34-4391-b4e6-c195cb854ac9", If you email userhelp@dyn.com the support team should be able to assist in seeing if your account qualifies for any current promotions.

I agree with the original post.

I've been using DynDNS since the early 2000s, intermittently using the free & donation-based services.  Enter 2014, no longer do those exist (which is ok - I get it -- things cost money).  A 5-year subscription at the time of this mandatory premium was $67.50 after a 25% "VIP" discount ($90 before discount), which I was happy to pay.

Now that the same exact service is up for renewal: $55 for 1 year, $220 for 5 years.  That's quite the (ridiculous) price hike.  Of note, Oracle's stock 5 years ago was about $39/share, today $54/share - we'll round up and say that's a 40% increase ([$39 * 0.4 = $15.6] + $39 = $54.6).  Meanwhile, the service cost rises 120% for the annual subscription and 144% for the 5-year subscription.

How about implementing a DynDNS Lite counterpart to the Pro?  It could be targeted to personal, normal users much like DynDNS was when it was first established.  Perhaps a harkening to the roots by acknowledging the reason why DynDNS was made and remembering all the supporters that actually made DynDNS successful?  Am I and other tenured DynDNS users no longer considered "VIPs" as we once were when transitioning to a pay-only model (which, incidentally, once again required end-used financial support to be successful)

There have been several alternatives to DynDNS established since 2014: [redacted].  One would think this competition would instigate better pricing from Oracle, rather than doubling, nay, tripling down on price hikes.

All disappointing.

--Loyal DynDNS user since 2002 (no longer?)

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding this change over time. We have been pleased that we have been able to offer our Dynamic DNS (Remote Access) services for over 20 years to over 5 million customers around the world. When we initially launched this service in the late 90s we never would have been able to predict this overwhelming demand. Our priority has always been the stability of the network and ease of use for our customers. To meet this we continue to make investments in the infrastructure supporting the Dynamic DNS (Remote Access) service. As a result, we have made price adjustments from time to time to help fund those necessary investments.

I appreciate your suggestion on a DNS lite product line, and will share it with our product teams for consideration. As I had shared previous, you can email userhelp@dyn.com and our support team will be able see if your account qualifies for any promotions. If you would like, you can DM me your username and I can let our team know that we had spoken regarding this to help with a more prompt response.

Tank you!

You wrote exactly what I was going to write.

I have been using Dyndns since aprox 2011 paid for the upgrade 2014 and now fell on my ass when i saw what they are charging.

You can get others for half the price with phone support and Dynu for free.

I am sad to be leaving but 220$ aint never going to happen!

Thanks again for your reply to OP.

I'm a big supporter of the Lite subscription suggested above. I have no need for all kinds of professional features that drive up the cost. Plain vanilla DynDNS would do just fine. I'll send you my username. BTW, I recall that I had some credits left in my account, but I can't find them anymore. Have these been deleted?

Michael,

is there a PM feature hidden somewhere in this forum? I can't find it.

Hi @"3931903", yes there is (and apologies, we're new to this space too so we are figuring it out as well):

  1. scroll up and click on "inbox" to the left of your avatar/user icon
  2. click "send message" which is about midscreen
  3. type in user name you wish to message (alternately if you are "friends" with the person you can click the red persons icon to the right and select from your address book)
  4. write message and hit send

To check responses, you will find them in your inbox.

Found it now, thanks, but apparently I can only send you a message if we are connected...

And...connected

I agree with the original poster.  A price increase from $18 a year to $55 a year is ridiculous and not at all worth it for someone like me who has one dynamic dns with no extra features.  I did email the userhelp address and was given a $5 off coupon code, but even that’s not worth it.  Not when I can get the same thing I have now from another company for less than half the Dyn price (after coupon).

I too would likely buy a lite version, but as it stands now, I’ll just let my hostname expire.

Add my name to the list of users leaving Dyn after many years due to price.  I used the free service for quite a while before moving to Dyn Pro in 2011 for $15/year.  Now, the value just isn't there at $55.  I'm a light user, I have only six hostnames and one webhop, so I'd gladly pay for a reasonably priced Dyn Lite option.  I've emailed the support address given above, but if all I get is a $5 off coupon, I'll be leaving Dyn for one of the many competitors within a week.
