Logs and log locations when installing EMC13.x

Hi,

When installing EMC13.x there are various logs and log location to consider.

The GUI seems to point to different logs depending of the step involved.

ORACLE_HOME is the Oracle Home of OMS to be installed.

I have identified few locations:

a) <ORACLE_HOME>/cfgtoollogs/cfgfw

also under <ORACLE_HOME>/cfgtoollogs there are various sub-directories for logs:

---

total 16

drwx------. 2 oracle oinstall 4096 Jun  3 18:25 cfgfw

drwxr-x---. 2 oracle oinstall 4096 Jun  3 18:25 opatch

drwxr-xr-x. 2 oracle oinstall 4096 Jun  3 18:26 oui

drwxr-x---. 3 oracle oinstall 4096 Jun  3 18:25 pluginca

---

What is the meaning of each of these sub-directories?

b) oraInventory/logs/InstallActionsYYYY-DD-MM_HH-MI-SSAM(PM)/installActions<timestamp>.log

c) <ORACLE_HOME>/cfgtoollogs/oui/installActions<timestamp>.log

d) /tmp/OraInstallYYYY-DD-MM-HH-MI-AM(PM)/nextgenYYYY-DD-MM_HH-MI-SSAM(PM).log

Can someone expain me if these are all the log locations needed to follow the installation of EMC13.x?

Can someone explain me what is the use and meaning of all these sub-dirextories for logs?

From which log should I monitor the installation?

Following only (as I thought) /tmp/OraInstallYYYY-DD-MM-HH-MI-AM(PM)/nextgenYYYY-DD-MM_HH-MI-SSAM(PM).log is not enough.

Thanks by advance for sharing your experience.

    Hi Laury,

EM Installation goes through different phases.

So these sub folders will hold the logs for each phase of Installation.

<ORACLE_HOME>/cfgtoollogs/oui/installActions<timestamp>.log file will only give you the percentage of installation completed, but do not give a detailed picture of your configurations going on.

<ORACLE_HOME>/cfgtoollogs/opatch   --->  This will contain the logs captured during the default patches installed during the EM Installation.

<OMS_HOME>/sysman/log/schemamanager   --->   This will contain the logs captured during the Repository Configuration.
<ORACLE_HOME>/cfgtoollogs/pluginca  --->  This will contain the logs captured during the Plugin Configuration.

<ORACLE_HOME>/cfgtoollogs/cfgfw  --->  This will contain the detailed logs captured during the OMS Configuration.

    Best Regards,
    Venkat

    Hi Venkata,

Thanks for these iexplanations. Very clear.

But I was unable to find it in the Oracle documentaion.

    Is it somewhere documented?

What about these other log files:

    oraInventory/logs/InstallActionsYYYY-DD-MM_HH-MI-SSAM(PM)/installActions<timestamp>.log

    /tmp/OraInstallYYYY-DD-MM-HH-MI-AM(PM)/nextgenYYYY-DD-MM_HH-MI-SSAM(PM).log

    Kind Regards

    Hi,

Not sure if a detailed explanation of logs was provided in a single section. Need to check.

Regarding the installActions log file. This is also a very high level log which gets generated during the installation. But for detailed information you have to again go to those locations.

nextgen is generally the term specific to the opatch. We generally do not much verify this log. Unless something gone wrong in specific to patching invocation.

I do not think this is actually needed for you to troubleshoot as well.

    Best Regards,
    Venkat
