File System Backups with Oracle Secure Backup and StorageTek Tape Systems

This article is intended to be a click-by-click walk-through illustrating how to get started with file system backups using Oracle Secure Backup and Oracle's StorageTek tape systems with Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 13c.

This article starts at the point where the initial system and application installation have been completed. The following steps must be completed before this process can begin:
- The system (such as Oracle MiniCluster) must be installed and configured.
- Oracle Secure Backup must be installed and configured with disk pools and tape storage.
- Oracle Enterprise Manager 13c host agents must be installed on each system.
- The Oracle Secure Backup plugin for Oracle Enterprise Manager 13c must be promoted on the Oracle Secure Backup administration server in the Oracle Secure Backup domain.
Walk-Through: Getting Started with File System Backup and Recovery
The following sections illustrate how to schedule a backup job, monitor backups, and perform file system recovery.
Schedule a Backup Job
The following steps use the Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control GUI to submit a file system backup job.
- Select Targets > All Targets.

- Select Databases > Oracle Secure Backup Domain.

- Click a target to open the home page for that target. This example selects OOS-SRVR-01.HOL.COM.

- Select Manage > File System Backup/Restore > Schedule Backup.

- Enter credentials for the Oracle Secure Backup domain (likely saved for you from the setup) and then click OK.

- Select the option to select hosts and directory information, and then click Next.

- Select the files and directories for backup. In this example, host
OOS-SVRV-01and file system
/var/tmpare specified. Click Next to continue.

- Review the backup job options, and then click Next to continue. Default values are used in this example to create a full backup.

- Review the backup job devices, and then click Next to continue with the defaults.

- Review the backup job details, and then click Submit Job.

- A status message is displayed. Click View Job to display more information.

Explore Live Monitoring Capabilities
The following steps explore the live monitoring capabilities of Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control.
- Exit the job details screen and use the Recent Target List to go back to the Oracle Secure Backup domain.
- Select Manage > File System Backup/Restore > Backup Reports to view backup reports.

- Click the Browse Backup button to browse the most recent backup.

/vardirectory to browse files and directories in the backup.

- Continue to browse the contents of the backup by clicking the
/tmpdirectory. Files in this directory are displayed.

- Use the Favorites or Recent buttons to return to the Targets home screen.

Perform File Recovery
The following steps use the Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control GUI to simulate a lost-file scenario and perform file recovery.
- To simulate a lost-file recovery scenario, first manually delete some files.
a. Connect to the machine with SSH:
# ssh [email protected]
. . .
[email protected]:~# cd /var/tmp
b. Delete some directories:
[email protected]:/var/tmp# rm -rf OraIn*
- Now, restore the deleted files. First, select Manage > File System Backup/Restore > Perform Restore.

- Select the option to select specific files to restore, and then click Next.

- On the Select Backup Period screen, enter a host name (this example uses
OOS-SRVR-01), leave the default backup period set to most recent, and click Next to continue.

- On the Select Files screen, select the
/var/tmp/Ora*files that were manually deleted at the start of this scenario.
a. On the left pane (Contents of the Backup) select the
Ora*as the filter, and click the Add button (located near the bottom of the screen; not visible in Figure 22).
b. Then on the right pane (Files/Directories for Restore) click Select All, and then click Next to continue.

- On the Destinations Options screen, review the information and then click Next to continue.

- On the Restore Options screen, review the information and click Next to continue.

- Review the scheduling options and click Next to continue.

- Review the summary information and click Submit Job to continue.

- Status information is displayed. Click View Job to monitor the restore process.
