X4270-M2 CPU compatibility

Hello,
I’ve got a Sunfire x4270-M2. It has a single Xeon e5620 cpu. I was thinking of upgrading to dual Xeon x5680 CPUs. Is the x5680 compatible with the x4270-m2? Are there any changes in the bios that I need to make? Thank you

Hi.
X4270-M2 is compatible with X4270-M2.
You will require additional Heatsink with screws, because upgrade single CPU system to dual.
No BIOS changes required. Install latest BIOS & ILOM recommended.

Great. Thanks. When adding the second cpu, do all of the memory slots have to be filled on the other side or do the slots need to be balanced. I have 12 sticks of ram. I balanced with d0,d3,d6 empty on both sides. Tried to boot but fans stuck in high speed and wouldn’t boot. I removed the second cpu and memory from that side and filled the CPU0 side memory and it works fine

Hi.
Docs for this server: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19245-01/index.html
Memory population rules: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19245-01/E21671/motherboard.html#50503715_pgfId-1290409
Upgrade server to two CPU configuration: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19245-01/E21671/motherboard.html#50503715_pgfId-1291156
I do not see mistake at your configuration. It's not require populate all DIMM slots for CPU.
Server have ILOM interface for remote control and administration. You can use it for check logs and analyze server state with 2 CPU.

Ok. I’ll check the log. I couldn’t get it to even preboot. As soon as I plugged the PS in, the fans kicked into high and it wouldn’t boot. I couldn’t get anything on the screen. I reverted to a single x5675 with the 9DIMMs filled and it works fine. I’ll check the ILOM tonight to see if it logged anything. I have no service fault lights on.

Hi.
ILOM - it's undepended computet inside X4270-M2. It's can mange via serial console or undepeded network port.
So it's not require got something on screen for read logs.
