Standard DNS migration and Dynamic DNS

a051219d-de02-4752-b44e-9c8ec1b87ce8Jul 3 2019 — edited Aug 28 2019

Hi everyone, I'm looking for advise and clarification on the migration stuff.  I have the following services:

1. Dyn DNS Pro (for a few hosts I want to connect remotely - not really related to my question)

2. Standard DNS

3. Domain Registration

I use Standard DNS for a website I run at home (just for fun - hardly any use.)  I have a dynamic IP address and Standard DNS functionality allows me to use dyn's host updater to handle ip address changes automatically.

The email I received for Standard DNS tells me that I need to migrate to Oracle Cloud Services.  When I click on the link, it describes the Oracle Service and indicates the following is not offered by the new service:

  • Dynamic DNS (Remote Access is not impacted and will remain as is)

I'm not sure what that really means.  I would like to read that as - go do the migration and everything will work without any changes on your host side - but technically, I don't know how it would.

As a follow up question, does anyone know the cost of changing services?

Thanks!

Hi @"a051219d-de02-4752-b44e-9c8ec1b87ce8", Apologies for the delayed response. To address your questions

Domain Registration:

There is no change to this product. Please continue to renew and manage your domain at https://account.dyn.com

Standard DNS:

Prior to May 31, 2020, you will need to migrate your DNS services.  Oracle values your business, and we hope that you will consider our OCI DNS product for its affordability and expanded services.  Below you will find links to our help guides on how to migrate your DNS zones into OCI.  Please note that a migration tool is expected in August to provide a no-downtime transition for our Express customers.

If you’re a Dyn Standard DNS customer, follow the steps documented https://help.dyn.com/migrating-dyn-services-to-oracle-cloud/transfer-standard-to-oci-dns/

The documentation on the link does not exists. And still there is no answer about the Dynamic DNS. Will it work after migration, as it does now?

Or do we have search for another DynDNS provider ?

Alexei

Thank you for letting me know about the link, the link should be working now. You can find its information via https://www.oracle.com/corporate/acquisitions/dyn/technologies/migrate-your-services/transfer-standard-to-oci-dns/

OCI DNS will continue to allow you to access your website or devices via your domain after migrating from your current Dyn standard DNS services

Thank you for a quick response.

Still I have a question about dynamic DNS.

On my home server I use the client inadyn, to update the ip address in my dyn.com account.

What settings for that client will be then, after canceling the Dyn Standart DNS Service by dyn.com and moving to the Oracle cloud infrastructure?

The API seems to be different, see initially https://docs.cloud.oracle.com/iaas/Content/DNS/Tasks/managingdnszones.htm

Not sure if Inadyn can use this API.

I actually sent this exact question to DynDNS support.  I was a TZO customer, who got migrated to DynDNS, and now sounds like being migrated to Oracle cloud services.  Although, it sounds like you should keep  your domain registration with DYN, but only migrate DNS to Oracle.  Also, at this time Dynamic DNS client update is not something that is currently supported.  There is some REST/API documentation that exists that appears to be quite vague which might allow for functionality for Dynamic DNS updates, but no actual client exists which has the same functionality of ddclient, inadyn, or other update client which may be in use.

Does that sum it up?

That certainly does not sound like a working transparent migration path.  A script for seamless DNS migration was mentioned.  Is there a chance that an update client is going to be written to handle Dynamic DNS customers, or as the original poster asked should we be shopping other providers for this service?

Thank You.

As an FYI --

I was able to migrate fairly easily to cloudflare's FREE DNS services (including using ddclient for Dynamic DNS  updates).

1) Sign up for new account on cloudflare

2) Add site ; it  goes out and gets the basic DNS records and asks if you want to import

3) Had to manually add some TXT records for DMARC, DKIM, etc

4) Went to DynDns and updated my domain registrar and changed DNS servers to the two cloudflare servers that were provided during process listed above and removed DynDNS servers.

5) Waited for records to be updated (not sure how long it actually took.  Did it at night, and it was working by the morning).

6) Updated ddclient to work with cloudflare (took some tweaking including updating ddclient version to work with cloudflare).

I do not require anything fancy, so this worked for me.  With DNS now successfully migrated, I can cancel Dynamic DNS services with DynDNS.  Now I will focus on shopping for place for domain registrar.  It appears I can keep that service moving forward with DynDNS, but I might price cloudflare and others just to see if it is more cost effective.

Not sure if the FREE cloudflare DNS services will be enough for everyone, but it appears it might be at least worth investigating.

Hi,

I also read that about migrating to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure DNS. Our company has credentials for DynDNS and I wanted to know whether we had to purchase a new set of credentials (user and password) for Oracle and so... I'm not quite certain about the cost for that since on the Pricing Page (https://cloud.oracle.com/en_US/iaas/pricing ) they only speak about the limits and how much one does have to pay if they are crossed.

Do you have any official info on the subject? I'm having some troubles with the phone call to the Support Number, so in the mean time I thought this medium would do.

Thanks in advance. GOD bless you.

RotBlitz

These are not just the limits, but the prices for the services.

I never thought this day would come. I was given the never-expire service for two domains as a gift of my donation in the very early days of dynamic dns service. It's been more than 10 years, I guess.

I would like to thank everyone at dyn.com for providing the great service for years.

Do I migrate to Oracle? How? There is not much information available for me to migrate to Oracle clouds, but there is a lot more info on aws route53. it took me a few days, and now I am using aws route53.

aws route53 is a little bit more expensive than Orcale, but for me, a lot easier to migrate. Can Oracle provide a step-by-step migration procedure?

User_FRTAB

RotBlitz,

The provided URL says "Page not found | Oracle".

User_FRTAB

RotBlitz,

That is not what I am looking for. That's an easy part. what I am,and some of us, looking for is how we are going to run the IP update client to update occasionally changing IP address from our servers. Is there any script or client to update when ip address is changed?

I could write very simple bash script using aws-cli to update route53 if my ip address is changed. For dyn.com, I was using ddclient. is there any equivalent client available?

RotBlitz

Yes, it seems they missed this part in the migration guide.  I'm confident that they will add it soon.

That's a very good question and I am glad I found you asking it. I just realized that our cell phone modems we use in the field have a hard coded DYN DNS servers in the setup. We have to use the DYN.COM since every time the cell modem gets power failed, it retrieves a new "static IP - what a joke" that it will hold until the next power cycle. Now I have to see if I can move to one of the others in the list in the next 9 months and start migrating the modem on EVERY system we have around the world....Crap.

RotBlitz

What is this "hard coded DYN DNS servers"?  If it is DYN.COM, then this is not the update server anyway.

mfevzikorkutata

Hi There,
It is been such a long time after last message. Could you please let us know what is current situation. Have you solved the auto ip change update for Dynamic DNS?
Regards...

User_FRTAB

I've moved on to AWS (route53) long before. I don't know now, but I couldn't find any DynDNS equivalent client on Oracle at the time.

mfevzikorkutata

Thank you for the information. It is unacceptable that you moved because of "Dyn to Oracle" migration project. I am working on this, if I found something, I would update here.
Thank you for the prompt reply.
