Java Virtual Machine

Hi,

I'm having trouble with my virtual machine in internet explorer.
Everything worked fine yesterday until I decided to re-organize my java setup and I uninstalled and then re-installed J2sdk 1.4 into a different location on my computer. I'm running windows 2000.

So now, when I go to a web site with an applet, i.e. java.sun.com, It tells me that I need a virtual machine and gives me the option to download one. (the Microsoft VM). But after it downloads, I get an error message saying:

"The Microsoft virtual machine you are attempint to install is a protected system component and can only be updates with a later release of the operating system or service pack"

To try and fix it, I reinstalled IE 6, and I also tried installing J2SDK 1.4 again but it didn't help.

So how can I re-install my JVM?? or is there some option somewhere that I can delete or select so IE will let me install a new JVM??

I have seen some other posts with the same problem but I have yet to see a solution.

Any insite would be much appreciated.

Scott Campbell

Have you tried looking on Microsoft's website for information on this? If there isn't any, maybe you want to try asking them since I have also seen several people writing about similar problems.

I have fallen 'prey' to the same situation. I did locate the Java VM download on the home page .. but after installing it I am still not able to use applet ... anyone come up with a fix or suggestion?

This is a huge problem for microsoft... they no longer support VM which basically leaves IE useless for browsing many websites.

I dont know what the deal is....everyone is being affect by the JVM....who knows maybe they will fix it. Im even having the problem with windows xp.

I know what you guy are talking about the problem is not you! The problem is Microsoft had to remove the JVM because of the anti-trust law suite that the goverment filed it is part of the deal that they had to make so no JAVA for IE or Windows tehy told me this after I installed WIN XP PRO on a system I built so for now we are srewed unless you can find a 3rd party JVM and install that its the only way to fix problem I'm now think of switching OS. The other thang is change EXPLORER to Netscape that stinks as an explorer IE is better I think but now it stinks too because there no JVM.
If someone find a 3rd party that work post the website here that folks can go and download it.

The real question should be, Does Sun off a Virtual machine that works Like Microsofts 5.00.3805?

Currently I have to disable the SUN JVM just so I can view online training courses, and other things that were created using Microsofts JVM.

If anyone knows of a direct replacement please let me know.

Thanks,

Joel

I ran into this problem as well using JRE 1.4.0 with IE 6 on Win 2k. I was finally able to get around it by doing the following:

1) Set Microsoft's JRE as the one being used in IE6
2) Reboot the PC
3) Install JDK 1.3.1_04 and make sure I had the IE checkbox selected
4) Reboot the PC
5) Set Microsoft's JRE as the one being used
6) Reboot the PC
7) Uninstall JDK 1.4.0 that was installed previously
8) Install JDK 1.4.0 again and make sure IE checkbox was selected

There might be a few steps in there you can skip, but this is what worked for me. I was then able to switch between JRE 1.4.0 and Microsoft's built in JRE without any problems. I don't know if this works with JRE installs. I only tested JDK installs because that is what I had on disk.

my advise is simply to sack off the crappo ie and use netscape where you don't get these problems.

Same goes for Opera both under Windows and Linux!

Just open the Java Plugin control panel applet, go to the browser tag, turn on IE, hit apply, then turn off IE and hit apply again.
Done.
