    HOST above has never appeared in this thread before now.
    OS/networking mis-configuration.
    Why does Oracle report "ol5-112" as HOST?
    What IP# is associated with this hostname?

    I have no idea where that came from, this is a new Oracle Linux installation. I gave the hostname of nitrogen.

    [[email protected] /]$ hostname
    nitrogen.localdomain

    Just FYI, I just created another new Oracle Linux 5.8 installation and tried again to install the database and got the exact same problem. There must be something simple I'm doing wrong to have been able to do it 4 times in a row. Driving me nuts. MS SQL Server takes about 10 minutes to install and I've been trying this for days now...

    /var/opt/oracle does not exist on my system. Is that what you were referring to? Any other suggestions?

    For what's it worth I was having what appears to be exactly the same problem, and have gotten past it. The key was something I saw earlier in this thread:

    (HOST=ol5-112.localdomain)

    I had the same thing in the listener.ora file that the installer generated. Like you, it was not the name assigned to the machine. I edited the file while the Installer was displaying the dialog about the NCA having failed, replaced ol5-112 with the actual hostname of the machine, and then clicked the Retry button in the Installer. Finally got past this stage!

    I'm reassured that Oracle's installation tools are just as effective and easy to work with as they were fifteen years ago. Why shouldn't we set aside most of a day to install a piece of software on an operating system made by the same company?

    Sheesh.

    Thanks vessey, here's what mine said:

    [[email protected] ~]# cat /app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/network/admin/listener.ora
    # listener.ora Network Configuration File: /app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/network/admin/listener.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.

    LISTENER =
    (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ol5-112.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
    )
    )

    ADR_BASE_LISTENER = /app/oracle

    I changed this line
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ol5-112.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
    to
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = nitrogen.localdomain)(PORT = 1521))
    I then proceeded with the installation. I rebooted and then did:

    [[email protected] oracledb1]$ lsnrctl start

    Is my database up and running now?
