I am working with my Oracle test environment. I have recently upgraded it from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3. I performed out-of-place upgrades for the GI and all databases. Everything looks good thus far. I see the following via opatch lsinventory:

GRID
Oracle Home : /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
Central Inventory : /u01/app/oraInventory
   from : /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid/oraInst.loc
OPatch version : 11.2.0.3.4
OUI version : 11.2.0.3.0
Log file location : /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid/cfgtoollogs/opatch/opatch2013-05-28_15-47-45PM_1.log

Lsinventory Output file location : /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid/cfgtoollogs/opatch/lsinv/lsinventory2013-05-28_15-47-45PM.txt

At this point I want to apply the latest PSU for my GI. I started off with trying to apply the first 11.2.0.3 GI PSU from Jan 2012 but noticed it was superseded by the latest PSU from April. Great! I grabbed this patch and hit the README.html. After drafting up all of the steps involved I try to apply it. For some strange reason I am being told it is not applicable. Here is the output I am ending up with:
The opatch Applicable check failed for /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid. The patch is not applicable for /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
patch /ora/software/patches/201304/GI_PSU/16315641 apply failed for home /u01/app/11.2.0.3/grid
CRS-4123: Oracle High Availability Services has been started.
Failed to patch QoS users.
opatch lsinv still shows the same state as prior to my patch attempt. I have scoured the web and the README me looking for help and simply cannot get this moving. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

The latest GI PSU is 16083653

Quick Reference to Patch Numbers for Database PSU, SPU(CPU), Bundle Patches and Patchsets [ID 1454618.1]

Not sure what patch 16315641 is - I could not locate it in MOS - the only reference is in MOS Doc 1452277.1 - you might have to open an SR

Ok, that is the same one I have been working with. When you unzip it you get the following:
    [[email protected] GI_PSU]# ls -l
    total 24
    drwxrwxr-x 8 root root 9 Apr 1 06:41 16056266
    drwxrwxr-x 5 root root 5 Apr 1 06:41 16315641
    -rw-rw-r--+ 1 root root 0 Apr 1 06:41 atp_lfp
    -rw-rw-r--+ 1 root root 450 Apr 1 06:41 bundle.xml
    -rw-rw-r--+ 1 root root 59961 Apr 25 01:20 README.html
    -rw-rw-r--+ 1 root root 21 Apr 1 06:41 README.txt
So the patch it is complaining about is included in the bundle.

Are you applying on a SPARC Supercluster ? If so please see #2 in the above MOS Doc. If not, I would suggest you open an SR

No, not using SPARC anymore. This is 64 bit OEL.

Ok, I will look to escalate this.

    Check the opatch logfile $CRS_HOME/cfgtoollog
I had the same problem and in the log file I got
UtilSession failed: Prerequisite check "CheckSystemSpace" failed.

OPatch failed with error code 73

    according to metalink

OPATCH needs about 4.4GB of disk space in $GRID_HOME to apply PSU patch, the issue happened as there's insufficient space.

On AIX, due to unpublished bug 9780505, space requirement is 22GB

my case is AIX :) so was omg ...

That solve my problem .. the patch was successful

    Hi,
Could be a lack of space in your GRID HOME. With the same symptoms in the main window first time i tried I had a "Required amount of space(5054.179MB) is not available." in the detailed log. After freeing some space and relaunching the "opatch auto" it was OK.
    Best regards
    Phil

My platform is OL 64 bits but I see it can be even worse on other platforms. Oracle binaries can sometimes be bigger than the databases but 22Gb to install a simple patchset update...?!?

Thanks for the input but it wasn't disk space. I think it had to do with the permissions of the patch directory. When I had unzipped the patch, it was owned by root:root. I ended up changing it to oracle:oinstall (recursively) and was then able to apply the patch.

Which absolutely baffles me as the PSU application is performed by the root user. Not to mention all directories had 0775 permissions with the files being 0664. Whatever works I suppose...

    Fix was:
    [[email protected] 201304]# chown -R oracle:oinstall /ora/software/patches/11.2.0.3/201304

    [[email protected] 201304]# ls -l
    total 423803
    drwxr-xr-x+ 3 oracle oinstall 4 May 31 12:06 DB_PSU
    drwxr-xr-x+ 4 oracle oinstall 8 May 29 15:33 GI_PSU

    [[email protected] 201304]# pwd
    /ora/software/patches/11.2.0.3/201304
    Thanks for everyone's input.
