Offline computer searching for update - how to stop it?

The computers on my offline intranet run an old version of Java. Someone tried updating Java on one of the machines, and now because that machine can't get to the internet it won't stop searching... I can't run any Java applications. How can I cancel the update? I've tried removing Java completely and reinstalling. The computer runs XP Pro. Thanks.
