supported API yet for custom JFR events?

I understand that new, supported JFR APIs were to be released as part of JDK 9, for doing things such as defining custom events.  Did that happen?  And if so, is there anything I could reference regarding how to use the new APIs?

Yes, they were. A small disclaimer is that some things may change in JDK 11, due to the open sourcing of it all.
