In my MySQL script in stored procedure. We frequently do this operation:

update A

set A.a = mod(a*b-c+d + e /4 , 4) *a + f ; -- (just for example)

we can make a customized function for convenience, but the task is performance critical. I just wonder what is the performance loss between writing it directly in the query and making a function?
