Hi,

Both on my first install and after by reinstall, the OracleVssWriterXE service will not start. I get these 3 items in the Application Events Viewer:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The process that hosts the writer with name Oracle VSS Writer - XE and ID {26d02976-b909-43ad-af7e-62a4f625e372} does not run under a user with sufficient access rights. Consider running this process under a local account which is either Local System, Administrator, Network Service, or Local Service.

Operation:

   Initializing Writer

Context:

   Writer Class Id: {26d02976-b909-43ad-af7e-62a4f625e372}

   Writer Name: Oracle VSS Writer - XE

   Writer Instance Name: XE

VSS-04111: Oracle VSS writer service for database instance XE started.

Additional info :

Oracle VSS writer version 12.1.0.0.0 Beta.

VSS-04112: Oracle VSS writer service for database instance XE stopped.

Additional info :

Oracle VSS writer version 12.1.0.0.0 Beta.o fix this

Any ideas on how this?

Thanks,

Tracy

    Hi there,

    I’m having the same „issue“ and question.

    I have been told (from colleagues) that this service is not necessary at all to run XE.

    However, if that’s the case – why is this service installed at all.

    An answer from an “insider” would be very kind.

    Many thanks and best regards

    Andre

    It does looks like we have a real issue with this service not starting.  I can reproduce it too. I will let you all know here if I can find a workaround.

    The service is provided to integrate with Volume Shadow Copy Service on Windows which you may or may not  choose to use. In summary, this service flushes writes to disk and makes sure the database files are in a consistent state where a point in time snapshot can be made by Volume Shadow Copy Service.

    For more information see:

    Hi Christian,

    thank you so much for this prompt and informative answer.

    What I take from it as the main part: XE is still working fine - except this one special feature.

    I do think, I (at least I) can life with that - in the meantime :-)

    Thanks again.

    Hi Christian,

    I just installed XE21c on a brand new (no upgrade) Win11 Pro

    and it seems the issue with "OracleVssWriterXE don't start " is back here.

    Can you please take a look and try to verify / confirm this?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Christian,

    Gerald asked me to add this to this thread:

    As he said he wanted to hand this issue over to you.

    In the meantime, I can say that it looks the same under F-Secure (unsurprisingly).

    Finally deactivated the service (you don't really need it);

    now also the Listener service starts (again) automatically - at least almost always;

    I'm still watching this... at the moment I can't say when/through what it's doing :-)

    Thank you in advance!

    VG André
