Upgrade in place for Mac

Complete newbie here. I can't find a way to upgrade MySQL Community Server in place on the Mac. It only seems to start a fresh installation each time, then I have to rebuild my database each time. I'd like to go from 8.0.18 to 8.0.20.

1. Are you using the official download from, https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/ ?
2. Are you following https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/osx-installation.html installation guide?
3. Always backup your instance before any upgrade.

Yes I have downloaded from that link. I've attempted to upgrade twice and each time it was as if it was a new installation. The last time was when moving to 8.0.18. It says in the notes at a certain point the installer should stop there if it's an upgrade but I've never seen that happen. It always goes right through to the end and I end up with a new installation with my previous version in a separate directory, seemingly inactive.
I will try to new version again when I have a moment and see what happens again.

Ya, see it's not going to upgrade it again - it says install next to the Server when it should say upgrade:

I posted there yesterday but it doesn't show up, and when I log in it says "there are unapproved messages".
