What is the architecture behind the Workspace movement from the Working WS to MAIN?

I have completed the upgrade from IP 16 to IP17 with a patchset of 19.12 and have been using for a year now.
I have this query regarding the architecture about what goes behind the Workspace movement from working workspace to Main WS and how does it actually work?
