How does APEX_WORKSPACE_ACTIVITY_LOG obtain the APEX_USER column data? What is it's SQL?

I have an application/ workspace that uses SSO through the use of a HTTP Header Variable (I think that is how it works).
The APEX_WORKSPACE_ACTIVITY_LOG is able to log the APEX_USER even when that "user" is not an added user within the workspace. How and/or where does it get this data from?
This is a capability that I want. I would just like to know how it does this to maybe make use how it does this in other ways.
Thank you,
Derek

even when that "user" is not an added user within the workspace.
You can have authentication schemes that do not use Apex workspace users at all, as in your case.
Any valid user, by whatever means it was authenticated, is available via the APP_USER substitution string.

I don't think you have to worry about the "how". If your "HTTP Header Variable Name" is "SSL_CLIENT_S_DN_CN", APEX will use that for APP_USER.
But then again... I do not really have expierence with this authentication method :-)
