trying to open data modeler but seem to open in the background but doesn't open the tab

I see the buttons in the tool bar but no tab for modeler. I close the ERD then I see the blank tabs. I then reopen the erd and the tabs go away. I am seeing this on ver 20.4 on windows and ver 19.2 on linux. Any ideas on what the problem is. Can't seem to find anything on line.
