Selection Persistence for Interactive Grid or Interactive Reports

Hello,
I am building a page in my application where the user must select templates
from an interactive grid (IG) of templates
. Our project requires that the grid is shown as pages instead of scrollable. The issue I am facing is that when a user travels to a different page in the IG, the selection on the previous page is lost.
I have tried storing the selection IDs in a page item
based on the selection change
event but the problem with that is that if the user removes a selection, there is no way of knowing.
Alternatively, a coworker suggested working with an interactive report (IR) and browser click events. So, far I have been able to add checkboxes in the IR but since I lack proficiency in javascript, I haven't been able to go much further.
I am currently using apex 19.2. Any suggestions, help or resources are much appreciated.
Thank you.

I was able to follow this blog to achieve the functionality: https://hardlikesoftware.com/weblog/2015/07/24/apex-interactive-report-checkbox-row-selection/
