What's the norm or standard for setting environment variables...

DB: 11g
OS: CentOS4

I just did a fresh install, I can run /usr/local/bin/oraenv to set all relavent variables. Now in a more production type environment, I'd like to know is it the norm to set said variables here /etc/profile, or in the oracle admin os user's profile? Or am I not think of this right at all?

Hmmmm, I used the 11g install documentation extensively and must have missed it, unless you're talking about simply running /usr/local/bin/oraenv. If it's not too much trouble can someone point me to it? Thank you.
