Generating SELECT criteria from list menu

Hi All,

I have a list menu (multi select) component (:P9_KPIs) which contains a list of column names in a table. The user can then select one, or more, values in this list.

After clicking 'GO' I then need a graph to update to show data in the selected column(s). For example:

SELECT :P9_KPI from my_table where DATETIME > (sysdate - 20)

I have two questions:

1) Is this possible and if so, how do I do it,
2) How do I handle multiple selections in the table.

Many thanks,

Colin.

Yes, its possible to create a graph.

When you create the graph you need to ensure that you include the same selection criteria as you had in the select list.

The basicss for a grapgh are as follows:
(Its really just another piece of sql)

    select null link,
    column_for_x_axis,
    column_1 for y_axis,
    column_2 for y_axis
    from your table

Use the instr syntax for multiple selections

    and INSTR(':'||:P_ITEM||':',':'||mycolumn||':') > 0

The basic charts are pretty simple. Start from there.

If you can produce a report from your query, you can also produce a chart.

    Thanks for the quick response!

Unfortunately, the issue is the construction of the SQL statement in order to return the desired data. The column name I need is the value selected in the list and it is this selection I need to dynamically use in the SQL statement to populate the graph.

So, lets assume that the value 'DCR' is selected in the list (:P9_KPI = 'DCR') I then need to use this selection to create "SELECT DCR from mytable". I have tried this using "SELECT :P9_KPI from mytable" but this fails (I guess my syntax is incorrect). I notice that I can use parameters in this way in a where clause but can not find literature for using it in the SELECT clause.

If I can get this to work drawing the graph is simple.

Can you please provide and example using the INSTR function? For example can I:

    SELECT INSTR(':'||:P9_KPI||':',':'||mycolumn||':') > 0
    FROM mytable
    WHERE datetime > (sysdate - 20)

Perhaps it will help to explain the problem I am trying to solve. I need to provide a selection list of KPIs (performance metrics) and plot one, or more of these metrics in a chart as selected by the user. The KPIs are stored as different columns in a single table referenced against the date, hence, for a single day there are many different KPIs the use could plot. I have done this in Xcelsius (Business Objects) but now need to replicate in APEX.

Lets start with the easy bit.
You can't use it like you have tried.

The instr is in the where clause, almost exactly as I had it above and it should reference your select list item.

Your whole problem is that if a column is not selected , its not displayed.
This happens easily if its an x-axis value, so its almost like you need to pivot the data so that your y-axis values fall on the x-axis.

Can you provide some sample data for a test

I pasted a tab delimited export of some of the table and pasted it below. First row is the column header. The select list should ideally not contain BSS or DATETIME columns (this was going to be my next challenge :-)).

Thank you soo much for your help!

This is not going to be easy by any means. In fact its going to be damn near impossible. :(

    The problems are as follows:

    i) unknown number of columns
ii) you need a pivot of rows to columns. Standard pivot does rows to columns.

While this is technically posisble, its very very difficult. Theres an example in tom kytes book (expert one-on-one)
on pivoting an unknown number of columns.

I might suggest a slightly different approach which is to have a separate chart region for each column.
Then you can have an exists query which will display the charts. You'll probably want to edit your own template.

    Thanks for your help Keith,

I will do a bit more research on PIVOTing and see what I can come up with. I am guessing that I will need to create a stored procedure and try to define the logic. I have a few places where this logic will be of use (different tables, different dashboards) so the effort will probably be worth it. I will post back any solution I come up with.

    Many thanks,

    Colin.

I think the fundamental problem here is that you are going to need to have a variable number of columns.
I'm not sure if Apex can cope with this scenario.

Also , even with a sample of your sample data, the axis range was so wide that in one case you could hardly see any graphs (although they did exist).

I don't use BI_PUBLISHER but I do know that it has its own charting capabilities. If you are licensed for it, then it may be worth you exploring this avenue.

I would seriously consider having a separate chart region for each chart with the region only showing on an exist query. (Ie that column has been selected).
