I am learning Java from this tutorial
Lesson: Quick Start (The Java™ Tutorials > JavaBeans(TM))
using the NetBeans IDE with the new updates.
My problem is the Oracle tutorial screen shots and instructions seem to be from an older IDE.
Everything is fine until you get to this page
Wiring the Application (The Java™ Tutorials > JavaBeans(TM) > Quick Start)
The options list they show is not what appears on the IDE. "TEXT" is not an option.
Does anyone know a newer, correct source for this fairly simple lesson?

I have never heard of any 'JavaBeans' IDE. Do you mean NetBeans?

Seem to be? If you have followed the tutorial you would have seen this:
This tutorial describes how to use NetBeans version 7.0.
That raises a few questions:
1. Are you using NetBeans? (rather than 'JavaBeans')
2. What version of NetBeans are you using?
The options list they show is not what appears on the IDE. "TEXT" is not an option.
Ok - but we have NO WAY of knowing what list DOES appear unless you post a screen shot. You need to SHOW US:
1. WHAT you do
2. HOW you do it
3. WHAT results you get
Also tell us, step by step, what you did for each step of that tutorial.

Oracle seems to have no tutorial for the 8.1.
I guess I will save the 8.1 and look around for the 7.0 just to learn it.
Maddening "improvements" make tutorials useless.

This: https://netbeans.org/kb/docs/java/quickstart.html claims to be for 8.0 and this page: https://netbeans.org/kb/index.html seems to be dedicated for 8.1

I've never heard of Java Bean. Are you SURE you aren't using NetBeans?

Yes ... all above is about NET Beans (lack of sleep, sorry!)
Since the tutorial is for 7.0 and not my version I tried
uninstalling
switch to NetBeans 7.0.1 that I downloaded
It fails to load entirely when installed ... then blinks off.
I tried turning off everything, browser etc. (browser had the tutorial page on it) in case of a conflict. No good. Same with reboot. Figured my download may have had a glitch so I uninstalled and re-installed it. No good. So I figured the file (from Oracle website) has a problem.

switch to NetBeans 7.0 that I downloaded from non-Oracle site.
Same deal.
It seems to begin to load OK and after giving a status note at the bottom "loading cached objects" it blinks off.
I found this bug report that describes my problem --

I have saved NET Beans 8 (which work OK) for later re-install. But I would like to run the older version so I can get through the tutorial.
It is worth it to fuss around with this older version as this tutorial is for beginners and is better for my level to learn from.

Well - I just downloaded 8.1 and went through the tutorial and 'text' appears just fine in the list.
I suggest you take another look at the tutorial and make sure you followed ALL of the steps to select the action.

I did slow down and try again twice. On 8.1 version it had a wrong screen grab/wrong drop down list of options at about the 4th step called "Wiring" ...

After Connection Wizard the "Action Performed" portion was a different list.
I cannot get the 7.0 or 7.0.1 versions to load after scrubbing version 8. So I am back to 8.1 version.

I will drop my previous plan (of trying out NB7.0) and forge ahead.

Well - the list in 8.1 is EXACTLY what it is supposed to be with 'text' in the list.
We can't help you since you don't seem to want to SHOW US:
1. WHAT you do
2. HOW you do it
3. WHAT results you get
All you keep doing is TELLING US what is NOT there. You have to SHOW US what is there.
See 'text' in the list above? See the 'Target Components' lists as 'jLabel1'?
All I did was follow the EXACT steps on the link page you just posted.

Thanks for all your help ... I got the whole lesson to work today!
Before... the word "TEXT" wasn't on the list... but I think it was just an issue with scrolling.
By fooling with the 7.0 version I had to uninstall ver. 8 and when I re-installed it today the entire drop down list shows, (as shown in graphic above) matching the tutorial and my project works!
Before I couldn't even get the app to pop up (broken code).
It might not even have been a bad install on the IDE. It could be I didn't see that scrollbar on the side.
Anyway ... thanks to this forum I have a new set of tutorial options for when I finish this.
I will spend my time fooling with this big amount of options in the Swing Components pane.
I need to know this vocabulary better for what these items are.
I have only worked with text boxes in JavaScript before.

Hi,
I have been asked to order a book on NetBeans (i.e. Java GUI environment) explicitly. But the book should be published in 2016. It should tell about JFS (JSF i dont know exactly) along with swings. Simple short examples but not lengthy like we have in the documentation.
