Oracle VSSWriter - VSS-00048: failed to put the datafile into backup mode

Hi,

I'm using Oracle 18XE for Windows and trying to backup in Azure.

Unfortunately I get the following error message in the Windows Event Log:

Level: Error

Source: Oracle.VSSWriter.XE

Event ID: 48

Details:

VSS-00048: failed to put the datafile into backup mode

Cause : OCI call failed.

Action : Check the accompanying error message.

Additional info :

Oracle Database 18c Express Edition Release 18.0.0.0.0 - Production

Oracle VSS writer version 12.1.0.0.0 Beta

Error at line : 4090

Failure on Freeze event

.

In the Details from Event Viewer I see:

ORA-01146: cannot start online backup - file 7 is already in backup.ORA-01110: data file 7: 'C:\ORACLEXE\PRODUCT\18.0.0\ORADATA\XE\USERS01.DBF'.

An execution of "backup database plus archivelog;" with RMAN is possible without errors.

But I want to create a backup via Windows Azure Backup.

Thank you very much

    Hello,

maybe a previous error happened and the tablespace is still in backup-mode.

Try to end backup-mode manually on the affected tablespaces:

    Alter tablespace USERS end backup;

Check for previous error which caused an aborted backup, leaving the tablespace in backup-mode.

I had a similar problem but it was just a side effect of this problem:

We have a bug where the Oracle VSS Service is not starting on Windows when Virtual Accounts are used (which is what XE uses). This service among other things quieces the database files so that they are consistant when they are copied. You'll have to wait till the next release of XE for it to work. I'm pretty sure that without that service running you cannot do shadow copy backups.

    Hello,

if the VSS service doesnt start, you can either change the service-account to another user (e.g. network service)

or you can add the virtual user account to local administrators and ora_dba user group.

Then the service should start successfully.
