is it possible to use internal frames without using a desktop pane?
The desktop pane doesn't allow you to add components to it(as far as
I can tell anyway) and so is not feasible for me to use.Any ideas
gratefully accepted!!!

    You can add components to a JDesktopPane, but then all windows have a fixed size and aren't movable (I tried it before).
    What exactly are you planning to do? Do you want to have your internal frames be over buttons, etc.? If that's the case you could just put a JDesktopPane over a JPanel with you components and make it opaque. I haven't tried that, but it should work somehow like that with a bit of experimenting.

    The way I wanted it to work is something like that.I have a frame that holds Panels containing all the components needed for functionality. What I wanted is that when the user hit a button, an internal frame would pop up in the middle of the frame over the existing Panels allowing the user to enter information.

    A JDialog might work for you in that instance.
