      hi all

there is one linux server on which 11i database... I am able to connect to this data base from my desktop as well from other servers as well. However from 1 linux server i am not able to connect to this server , it is giving TNS: No listener error.

          Firewall ?
          Routing ?
          DNS problem ?
          tnsnames.ora problem ?

          Start by testing network :-

          ping server
          telnet server port

            Hi,

Can you post the output of
            tnsping <database>
It seems the tnsentry is not correct.

            Regards

              hi anuraag

Tnsentry is fine , i think so.. here is the output of tnsping

Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
              Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.XXX.XXX.173)(PORT = 1521))) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = dwh)))
              TNS-12541: TNS:no listener

this server has database client and i am able to ping to other tnsnames.ora enteries(means other databases).

and to the remote database(dwh) i am able to connect from other servers and desktops..

                Hi,

So from this machine are you able to connect to 10.XXX.XXX.173?
                ping 10.XXX.XXX.173
Also can you check from the machine where you are able to connect to dwh, whether the ip address and port number you sepcified here is correct?

If yes then check if your port is open to comunicate between your linux box and dwh.

                Regards

                  Check for firewalls.
                  # /etc/init.d/iptables stop

                    hi

                    sorry for replying late..

I am able to ping to the server where DWH database is installed( I am able to connect to database remotely as well from various other machines except one linux server).

The linux server from which i am not able to connect to DWH database has several other enteries in its oracle client tnsnames.ora file. And i am able to connect to those databases on various servers. The only database i am not able to connect from this linux server is DWH. ON this linux server i have stoped firewall as well by /etc/init.d/iptables stop.

Still i am getting error as NO listener(but listerner is running on the machine and i am able to connect from other machines)..

                    Please suggest something

                    Thanks

I can't put my finger on it, but I suspect you have general networking issues.
                          127.0.0.1 is an unrouteable IP#
to transit between subnets multiple hops are required.

At minimum the linux host needs to be assigned a routeable IP#, in addition to localhost.

                            hi

even i suspect some networking issue, however from the same server i am able to connect to other databases on different machines.

I like to mention that client installed is 10.2.1.0 and the database to which i am not able to connect is 11i and to those i am able to connect are 10g. However in my desktop i have same version of client and i am able to connect to DWH database.

                                telnet <ip-address> server port

                                try this from linux server....
ip-address -- address of machine where listener is running
server port -- port in which listener is configured.

what is the output of this command. does it give a blank screen ?

                                  post content of tnsnames.ora

using CUT show whole terminal session where you invoke sqlplus & initiate a connection to DWH & error results

                                  PASTE everything back here

telnet from the server giving error saying connection to the remote host is refused.

                                    however ssh is working.
MOreover i am able to connect to that database with same listener and port number from other servers except this one.
