Why do I get a "communication error" while trying to navigate to an app ?

Does anyone know how to fix this ? I get the following error when I try to navigate to one of my apps in the workspace. I have used it successfully before. I tried restarting the servers, copying the app, re-registering the app, and provisioning the app.

There was some communication error. Response is : http://valhfmsvc/hfm/GlobalWorkspaceNav/bpm/modules/com/hyperion/hfm/web/appcontainer/Adf.asp

We had this issue a couple of years ago and I think this is what resolved it:

*HFM users receiving error "There was some communication error" while opening Application from SSL enabled environment [ID 806163.1]*_

          Applies to:
Hyperion Financial Management - Version: to - Release: 9.3 to 11.1
Information in this document applies to any platform.
Issue occures while logging into both HFM via Workspace and the HFM Client regardless of database platform, or application server.

Users can login into Workspace but they receive the following error while opening HFM Applications:
There was some communication error. Response is : http://frmrssarc.dc-oracle-support.com/hfm/GlobalWorkspaceNav/bpm/modules/com/hyperion/hfm/web/appcontainer/Adf.asp

When opening from Win32 client, they receive "Could not authenticate the specified user. %0" error.
Meanwhile the SharedServices_Security_Client.log reports the following error:
          Error Code: 2 NestedException:
javax.naming.CommunicationException: simple bind failed: ldapb2a-qa-emea.app.alcatel-lucent.com:1793 [Root exception is javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target

The issue was caused by the fact the SSL certificate used by MSAD Server was not imported into HFM Application Server.
HFM Application Server should have use a certificate that AD machines trust otherwise, HFM gets SSL handshake exception while authenticating users from AD.

SSL certificate used by AD machine must be imported into HFM Application. The SSL documentation can help in configuration:

Try restarting your database that might help.

This is a generic error message, that may appear whenever web or application component of Financial Management is not available.

I am listing some of the causes and resolutions, but before moving on those please make sure of the below points:
              * Is HFM application working from client?
              * Have you changed the UDL file for HFM is past some time?
              * Have you upgraded your server in environment ?

based on the above points check for possible cause in your case
              The causes can be:

              FOr Release: 9.3.0 –
Symptoms: Attempts to open, delete or create an HFM application through Workspace or the Desktop Client fail.
Error: There was some communication error. Response is: http://servername/hfm/GlobalWorkspaceNav/bpm/modules/com/hyperion/hfm/web/appcontainer/Adf.asp
boldCause: The UDL file containing connection details to HFM repository database has been renamed or moved.
HFM is unable to communicate to the database as it cannot find the UDL file referenced in the Windows registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
              Hyperion Solutions\Hyperion Financial Management\Server\SystemDataLinkFile

              Release: 9.2.1 –
HFM applications do not open in Workspace.
Error: "There was some communication error. Response is : http://servername/hfm/GlobalWorkspaceNav/bpm/modules/com/hyperion/hfm/web/appcontainer/Adf.asp"
boldCause: HFM Server is unable to access the Shared Services configuration information. In order to obtain configuration information, HFM attempts to open URL specified in ConnectionInfo Windows Registry on the HFM Application Server.
If URL specified there is not accessible, HFM will open the HsxServer.exe and CASSecurity.exe processes but it will not be able to list HFM applications when users click on connect to Server/Cluster.

Please check out all the above things and narrow down to the exact cause for this.
please check and revert so that resolution can be found.
