ERPi will read the metadata and actually store the dimension/segments into ERPi's relational tables.
Yes depending on if you have a classic or empa app, you need to run the metadata rule, but it doesn't need to load anything. You can either set them up as FDM if you are in EPMA, or in classic it will generate a file that you don't need to load.
Then you can go ahead and run your data load rule without a problem and without affecting the metadata.
