Hi,

Oracle 8i is never intented to be used on Windows 7. Oracle will not support it. I think you have to look at virtualisation (Virtual Box, Virtual Pc, WMware), to get Oracle 8i installed on Win XP (or Win 2000/98). Why do you need it anyway?

Because my client has shifted on Windows 7,

I installed 8i on XP and was running wonderfully since the XP launched, Now my client is deciding to switch on Windows 7,It is a very small network i.e of 5 PC ,so XP works fine as DB server also.
I Installed Oracle 8i DB and FORMS 6i on a PC ,and install form runtime on client.The Software was running smoothly.Now I am Stuck,
What to do,or please tell me which version of ORACLE supports Windows 7.

None, at the moment. 11gR2 is planned.

I have to admit that this made me laugh. It is equivalent to asking why old radio tubes do not work in a transistor radio. (Yes, I know that 'dates' me.)

Your customer needs to review why they are upgrading the operating system and not the database. The basic question is "which is more important - safety of the data or safety of the operating system?". Based on the answer, I would be making some professional career decisions.

Microsoft has changed many internals. How can you reasonably expect an older version of Oracle (that was created to conform to the older Microsoft specification) to work with the new Microsoft internals API?

Indeed, Oracle has stated that Oracle 11g Release 2 will be the first version of the Oracle database supported on WIndows 7. You probably can get Oracle 10gR2 and/or 11gR1 working, if you are willing to risk unexpected behaviour - there are instructions on the net. (There are also viruses on the net - not everything out there is good.)

I'd have to echo the others, especially Hans.

You realize, of course, that Oracle 8i was fully, completely, and totally desupported long before Windows 7 was even a gleam in Bill Gates's eye . . . It has been desupported so long that even running it on an OS that is capable of doing so is putting your company's data at serious risk. Your company may say "we can't afford to upgrade", but they need to ask themselves if they can afford to have Oracle tell them there's nothing they can do when (not "if") the db goes belly-up. They certainly seem to be able to upgrade their OS to the latest gee-whiz eye-candy version.

Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to also check the threads available there for additional assistance and guidance.

How in the world does that help an organization protect their data? Oracle will not certify the WIndows7-Oracle8i combination.

I too would like to know how to install Oracle 8i on Windows 7. Most of you responding seem to think that this is a "stupid" idea. I am trying to connect to a VAX 6630 running Oracle 7. My client is a billion $ top 10 Fortune 500 multi-national company that has been in business longer than Microsoft AND Oracle put together. The VAX 6630 has been running over 20 years and the disks have been spinning just as long. This is a lot better than Microsoft can do considering they can't even put together an operating system that works for more than a couple of years. Welcome to the REAL world, pal.
I am currently connecting to the VAX with Oracle 8i installed on Windows XP. Works great! So, putting aside all the snickering, can you answer the question or not? No time to laugh here. We have REAL world problems to solve.

The VAX was a great machine with a great OS. I'm not surprised it is still humming along. Perhaps, from a pure business standpoint, this reliability is what led to the demise of DEC ... once you buy their equipment, there's little reason to spend more money with them. But all hardware fails eventually. Where do you get hardware support for this setup?

What do you do with your real world, Fortune 500 problem when you have to ask for help from Oracle? What is their response?
