hi,

I just installed Oracle 10G Express Edition. Installation was successful, when I tried to connect the database using
Scott/tiger or hr/hr it does not Connect and throwing an exception :

ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error

How can I get rid of this error to connect to the database.

I am using Windows Vista 64 Bit OS....

Thanks

Have you started the listener for the database?

IF you are using DHCP to get the IP address, and you have not installed the Microsoft Loopback Adapter, the chances are very high that you will get 12560.

It is also possible to get that message is you are not using the same adapter (or do not have networking) when the listener attempts to start or when trying to connect.

    Post the results of

    ipconfig /all
    lsnrctl status

and the contents of the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora found in the %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin directory

And tell us what steps you skipped/missed in the install doc at http://www.oracle.com/pls/xe102/homepage

Have you started the windows Oracle service? Please check if you have; if you haven't, please do

net start command should sort this out

    C:\>net start OracleService<SID>

Or better still, get into the windows control panel, then go to services and start the OracleService<SID> service

You can also get this error because you do not have the ORACLE_SID environment variable set.

if you are trying to connect using sqlplus (Oracle 10g XE), then you should use the following format:

    SQL> connect scott/tiger@//<servername>:<port>/<sid>

Where <servername> is the PC on which Oracle is installed, <port> is the port used by the listener service (default: 1521), and <sid> is database name (Default: xe). <sid> is optional in some cases.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers.
