      What is the reason why we don't have to set Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY and Context.PROVIDER_URL in a RMI application? Why the statement Context ctx = new InitialContext(); alone is sufficient?

          Not sure, but I would suspect that they'll fall back to JNDI providers for RMI-JRMP.

            Reviving this ancient thread to note that these properties aren't required when using URLs with protocol prefixes when calling Context methods. This is the case for all providers, not just RMI, and there is certainly no fallback and the 2nd poster suggested.
